In several of our posts, we’ve referenced pH-levels and why it’s important to monitor them during your plants’ growing process. In this post, we’re going to focus entirely on why you should monitor your soil’s pH-level, and how maintaining an appropriate pH-range will contribute to your plants’ healthy and prosperous growth.

pH is a measure of the concentration of protons (positively charged particles found in the nucleus of every atom). pH is used to measure how acidic or alkaline a substance is. The numerical range of the pH scale runs from 0 to 14 with 7 representing the median or neutral point. Substances lower than 7 are considered acidic while alkaline substances are those with a pH level higher than 7. Battery acid has a pH level of 0, liquid drain cleaner a pH level of 14, baking soda a pH level around 9 and black coffee a pH level around 5.

As it relates to agriculture, the pH level of your soil determines what and how nutrients are used up by your plants. Nutrients essential for healthy plant growth, including nitrogen, phosphorus, potassium, calcium and magnesium each have a limited pH range where they can best be absorbed.

Marijuana plants grow best in a slightly acidic soil. Maintaining a slightly acidic soil and water content allows for the optimum utilization of the nutrients mentioned above along with sulfur, boron, copper, iron, manganese, molybdenum and zinc. Maintaining a pH-range around 6 allows the maximum amount of needed nutrients to be absorbed. If your soil’s pH level rises above 7, your plants roots may have difficulty absorbing iron, copper, zinc, manganese, and boron. Conversely, if the soil’s pH level drops below 5, your plants will not be able to access phosphoric acid, calcium and magnesium. Without the ability to absorb needed nutrients, your plants could experience nutrient deficiencies that affect their healthy development.
