In a previous blog post (What does it mean to be nutrient-rich?) we highlighted natural ingredients found in Forest Floors Organic Soils that make them nutrient-rich and conducive to maximizing your plants’ healthy growth. In this post, we focus on the three most essential nutrients: nitrogen, phosphorus and potassium, often referred to collectively as NPK. Just as human beings need air, food and water, all plants need nitrogen, phosphorus and potassium in order to grow and function properly.
Nitrogen is the most common chemical element and it appears in all organisms. In plants, it’s used to support a number of critical developmental processes such as photosynthesis, in which plants use sunlight to turn carbon dioxide and water into energy. Nitrogen is also found in amino acids, which synthesize proteins, and is important for the development of your plants’ leaves. Although Nitrogen is often present in soils, soil often needs a boost. This can be achieved by amending soil with a product such as fish hydrolysate.
For marijuana plants, nitrogen is particularly important during the vegetative stage (see our previous blog post for more information). During the flowering stage, when your plants no longer produce new leaves, you’ll want to decrease nitrogen levels to prevent nutrient-burn (see another previous blog post for more information).
Phosphorus is another essential plant nutrient, which is usually added to soils with fertilizers. It supports important developmental functions for healthy plant growth, such as encouraging root formation, maintaining DNA integrity and promoting bud flowering. Whereas nitrogen levels should be lowered during yours plants’ flowering stage, phosphorus levels should be increased to stimulate bud growth.
Finally, potassium is critical to maintaining your plant’s immune system so that it can handle environmental stressors like insects and diseases. It also helps plants function correctly and affects the look, smell and taste of your buds. If your plants experience low levels of potassium, their growth can become stunted and generate lower yields.
Like nitrogen, phosphorus and potassium can also be derived from compost and manure. Forest Floor Organic Soils takes our organic soils cultivated from abandoned log yards and amends with a blend of fish hydrolysate, fish bone meal, kelp, shrimp, crab, humic acids and lime.
